Prepare for adult life, work, or further learning

Key Stage 4

Key Stage 4 (KS4) is for young people aged 14 to 16, usually in Years 10 and 11 of secondary school. This is a very important time, because it’s when pupils prepare for and take their GCSEs or equivalent qualifications. The outcomes can influence their future decisions, like going to sixth-form or college, doing an apprenticeship, or going into the workplace.

What are GCSEs?

GCSEs are exams and coursework-based qualifications taken at the end of Key Stage 4. Young people usually take between 6 and 10 GCSEs, depending on their abilities and school choices.

Some pupils may also take Skills Challenge Certificates as part of the Welsh Baccalaureate, which focuses on teamwork, problem-solving, and real-life skills.
